The Cabin in The Woods Questions

1) The 4 characters that Jeremy talks about are; the Consumer, the Sexual, the Marital and the Domestic. these women are said to be found in any media product or advert and each are usually support roles to the male main character, in the movie there is only 2 of these roles and they are the Sexual from the 2 main female characters and the Domestic from the lab assistant.

2) when it comes to the final girl theory there are almost rules and regulations that they fall under, usually a virgin, smart and clean girl who's only purpose in life is to be mature, with Dana we see that she doesn't do drugs nor is she slutty and overall she is smarter than everyone else. however, she has done drugs in the past, she has had sex and she wasn't as smart as the jock (before the gas kicked in) so she barely crosses the line for the final girl theory, this shows during the ending of the movie when she goes from being the kind and scared girl who wants to get out alive to being the murderous and angry girl who wants to get out alive. because of this change she pretty much has her final girl privileges revoked and gets attacked by the werewolf.

3) at the very start of the film we hear Jules mention how she has had her hair dyed blonde to impress her boyfriend, we later hear that the hair dye had special chemicals that changes someone's personality to be dumb and horny all the time. Jules started out as a trickster who was not completely stupid and was quite brave, this changed as the movie progressed to the stereotypical dumb blonde who would screw anything and acted drunk all the time. this made her fall under the horror archetype of the whore who gets killed wearing seductive clothing and when they don't expect it.

4) the male gaze theory is magnified in this film tenfold, most of the male gaze theory is based around sexualized and objectified women, this is done through high angle camera shots to make women seem less powerful or low angle camera shots to focus on her seductive sides. this is done a lot through the movie as we see scenes such as the secret window into Dana's room which showed eye level to concentrate solely on Dana as she got changed, or the fireplace scene that showed Jules seductive dancing from a low angle to give the viewer the sense that what they are watching is not for childish eyes. however, objectified women aren't the only part of male gaze, a small piece of the male gaze theory is based around making the men seem more masculine and in control which we see during the heroic speech made before the jump that ends in both disaster and realization, the stoner is the only guy to survive and this is because a lot of the teenage boy who would watch this film would feel like they connect better with the drug addict since it reminds them of themselves.

5) it happens a lot during the scenes where we see the development of a character, a good scene for this is the truth or dare scene where the girl goes and makes out with the wolf head. the reason it is important is that through these scenes we can build the character around the archetypes that are made for horror movies, because Jules accepted her dare we see her as the person who thinks fun is more important that dignity or pride, meanwhile she is also a bully as she teases Dana about how she would never complete a dare since she is too frigid or stubborn.

6) in the cabin in the woods we only ever see 4 females, based on the fact that there are 6-7 main male characters we already see that the female gender is outnumbered by the males and this could be for any reason, the fact that there are less girls though is not enough to state objectification yet. however, throughout the film the girls that we do see all fall under stereotypical personalities that do bring down the gender, the only smart person is the assistant in the lab and she is pushed down or back by all the male characters in the film. the old woman at the end is treated as a bad person and shown as a bad person when really she just wants to save the world, even if it kills a few people, in comparison 6 peoples deaths is better than 7 billion.
